KUROSHITSUJI (BLACK BUTLER) : SEBASTIAN MICHAELIS

WELL, it's not only twin ciel theory or two ciel theory or D.I.D ciel theory, now it is two sebastian theory! really! just how many mysteries are there in Kuroshitsuji (black butler) !!!??? tsk..tsk...tsk, it's even more mysterious than detective conan!

The 2 Sebastians Theory?
I was talking with into–the–abyss the other day, and something she said really surprised me because of how much it made sense. We were wondering why Sebastian was so inconsistent in his treatment of Ciel. She told me about an inner dichotomy within him- that there are literally 2 personas. And that really got me thinking.

We know that there are Phantomhive twins- the theory’s been all but confirmed. The evidence keeps stacking up in favor of it, but I stupidly kept doubting it. Well, this new revelation about Sebastian settled those doubts. There are 2 Sebastians present, as in 2 physical Sebastians, because there are 2 boys to serve. This changes everything.
And looking back, there are actually a lot of clues that have been pointing at the 2ST all along, from as early as the Ripper arc:

image

Sebastian swore by the moon that his name was Sebastian. Grell later calls him evil for doing that- we know that the moon is wont to change phases. So just like there are different phases of the moon, there are different physical phases to both Sebastian and Ciel.
See, this is why I dislike fan scanlations and the Yen translation. Both are inaccurate to the Japanese language. Even the raws don’t cover the full context of what’s being said. It’s not “I”, it’s a form of “we” that he actually uses. Now, I don’t speak Japanese nor am I fluent, but I know for a fact that grammar can’t just be dismissed like this. “We made a vow to the moon” is the English equivalent of what he’s saying, but it’s hard to explain in a language other than Japanese.

Next, notice how big and bloody the wound on his right shoulder is.

image

Look at his right shoulder on the left panel- the wound is gone! What? There’s no way Yana would do that by accident. The explanation is simple: that’s another person. Now notice Grell’s strand of hair, adjacent to Sebastian 1′s left elbow. On the left panel, that same strand is pointing at Sebastian 2′s right elbow. Something doesn’t feel right here…
But the 2ST is most obvious in the Campania arc. Here’s the fan-translated (unfortunately, it’s a shame how much is lost in translation) panel:

image

Undertaker used the -tachi after butler, as well as the plural form of “you.” But of course, English is too limited to properly express it. Japanese is a very context-based intricate language, so once more, we lose out on an important clue within the grammar. But then UT says:

image

First he says Sebastian would be able to protect Ciel, then he says he makes Ciel miserable, and now wants to kill him? The counterargument could be that the demon’s contract brings Ciel emotional distress and UT himself is unhinged enough to pull a move like this. But isn’t that too simple and boring an explanation? UT is directing his comments at someone else, the other Sebastian. Look at Sebastian’s reaction at the bottom- that doesn’t seem like a natural reaction for someone who’s about to be killed. He looks too calm, like the scythe is directed at someone else instead.

image

Then we have the most telling page of all. Sebastian 1 is in the top panels- his hair spikes point in correlating directions. But Sebastian 2 in the bottom right has spikes pointing in the opposite direction! You might say it’s just a small detail, but look closer- the answer’s right in front of you. Sebastian throws his coat at Ciel from bottom left.
What else is at bottom left? The speech bubble in the top right panel, expertly covering something- or someone else. Now notice that Sebastian 2 in the bottom right is looking at Ciel from the bottom left position, and the right side of the boat is cut, thus obscuring Sebastian 2 from view.

image

And then we see this. Where is Sebastian’s huge, gaping wound? That amount of blood is impossible to ignore by inking standards. Yana must have done it on purpose. And notice that again, the right side of the boat is cut. There are 2 butlers at work here and the panels interchange them subtly.
Then in chapter 102, Yana plays another clever trick on us:

image

We all assumed Diederich was referring to the tanks, but he had just seen Sebastian arrive. And as a close ally of Ciel’s, he knows that Ciel has “twin” butlers. Diederich is blatantly telling them that the other Sebastian must be on his way.
But then Bard makes an interesting comment:

image

Again, butler with the -tachi. Unfortunately, it was lost in translation and in the raws. It’s understandable because Japanese is a hard language to grasp so even the Japanese publishers may have erred. -tachi can’t just refer to any plural, it must mean what it’s attached to. Sometimes, native speakers may say otherwise, and even though I’m not Japanese nor fluent in the language, what I say here is more accurate than what some native speakers say.
To be honest, I really hate fan translations because of differences like this. Anyone can translate something. I don’t understand why anyone would trust scanlations. 99% of the content is lost- for instance, Ciel’s name is shieru and the translation calls him Ciel; see how big the difference is?
Back to the main point, Bard tells Diederich that their butlers are supermen. Why bother? Diederich just saw Sebastian save Ciel from a moving tank. But he only saw 1 butler at work. Bard informed him because Sebastian 2 had just arrived, the one on the very last panel, standing away from the one holding Ciel. (Notice that the eyes are staring in a different direction than the full-body Sebastian)
There are many more clues in the panel placement and in the context of the original Japanese, but I won’t list them here for now.
It’s also been hinted at in the anime. Notice this gif:

The hair spikes move of their own accord. That’s not just a random animation mistake. It’s possible that this Sebastian did it to disguise himself as his butler-partner. After all, a big theme in Kuro is disguise and deceit. And what better way to enforce that than to have both Ciel and Sebastian deceive the audience from day 1?
